The Case For Accessories

So often I’ve heard the fashion cliche, “If there is one wardrobe category to splurge on, it must be your basics.” The idea being that Repetto flats and a cashmere v-neck sweater save more money in the long run (buying quality), reducing frequent re-purchasing.

I disagree, and here’s why: classic pieces, basic T’s, trenches, black skinny jeans and ballet flats get a lot more use than your quirkier items. As such, they wear out faster, especially if you live in a town that requires walking (this goes for everything, not just your shoes.) In my experience, cashmere sweaters get moth holes just as wool sweaters do. When you’re on the go, a $300 trench coat can get stained with a coffee spill just as easily as a trench from Forever21 (unless there is a special treatment to the fabric). While a more expensive item may last longer than a non-expensive item, it is not immune to wear and tear. And don’t get me started on the notion of an Alexander Wang white T-shirt that will have incurably yellow armpits after a couple dozen washes and wears (Let’s be real). Same goes for a soft Tee from Old Navy or J.Crew.

I buy my basics (which I know are bound to stretch out, tear, and get stained) at affordable prices. Well, incredibly cheap prices actually, such as $5 for a white T at F21 or $40 for ballet flats on sale at Steve Madden. I care for them just as I would if they came from a high designer, I get repairs as needed and they last plenty long enough. Not to mention, replacement at those prices is no big deal.

What do I splurge on? Accessories. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about retail therapy that involves spending $20 on just as many pieces of costume flare. But I’ve found costume baubles from J.Crew or Banana Republic immediately upgrades even the most inexpensive, basic outfit. And you can’t beat the glamor factor provided by a pair of high- end sunnies. The quality of materials is apparent over less expensive versions, unlike a black chiffon dress whose quality is about fit. Hello, tailoring.

I think now, after several posts that are mostly text, I’ll go ahead and get back to what I created the blog for, chic pieces (with links) that provide wardrobe inspiration at honestly affordable price points.

Thanks for reading!
